Boys' Town hold Reno to a draw
published: Friday | February 16, 2007

LeVaughn Flynn, Staff Reporter

RENO COMPLETED their second round yesterday when they drew 1-1 with Boys' Town in a rescheduled Wray and Nephew National Premier League match, at the Tony Spaulding Sports Complex.

The match, which lasted 43 minutes (plus three minutes extra time), was a continuation of a January 4 fixture, which was suddenly stopped because of gunfire in the proximity of Collie Smith Drive, where the match was being played.

The Jamaica Football Fede-ration said the match was continued instead of replayed because of the circumstances under which the game was called off.

Had the game been interrupted by natural causes (rain, earth-quake), then it would have to be replayed in its entirety, according to the rules of the JFF's Competitions Committee.

Lucky break

Reno, which had already quali-fied for the second end-of-round final, looked on course for another victory when Kendrie Quarrie scored in the 74th minute with a left-footed shot from outside the area.

But Boys' Town, which earlier had squandered several scoring chances, got a lucky break in the 84th minute when Cliffroy Vidal took down an unthreatening Garfield Gillespie in the area.

Fabian Watkins then calmly converted to ensure his team got a share of the points.

Reno inched closer to Harbour View with 44 points, three less than the leaders, while Boys' Town are on 24 points in eighth spot.

"This 43 minutes was a good 43 minutes," said Reno assistant coach Aaron Lawrence. "Both teams came out fighting hard and it's unfortunate not to come away with a victory," he said.

Try to get points

Andrew Price, coach of Boys' Town, said he expected a better performance in the third round as Boys' Town had only earned nine points from their 10 games so far, with another rescheduled game set for this Sunday, against Arnett Gardens.

"We went through a bad spate of injuries in the second round and we lost our national representative, Oneil Thompson, who went overseas," said Price.

"Now, with most of the players back, it augurs well for the third round and we really have to try and accumulate as many points as possible."
