A sparkling affair
published: Friday | February 16, 2007

Left: Perhaps some glittering diamonds have caught the attention of Marlene Malahoo Forte (left) and Christine Stiebel at Bijoux Jewellers Hearts On Fire diamond showcase.   Right: What's in the fortunes of Rose Tavares-Finson (left) and Charlene Robertson?

Daviot Kelly, Staff Reporter

It was a sea of blue and silver at the Terra Nova, last week Friday, as Bijoux Jewellers treated guests to a 'sparkling' affair.

Hearts On Fire, one of the world's leading diamond companies, showcased some of its finely cut products. The atmosphere reeked of 'high quality', from the flat screen televisions to the decor. And, this was appropriate as these aren't just any diamonds.

Hearts On Fire diamonds are renowned for being the most accurately cut in the world. Less than one per cent of all rough diamonds will be used to make a Hearts On Fire diamond. The company representatives admit that one of their diamonds takes four times longer to prepare. But they also admit that once you get it, it will be worth the wait.

It is said that out of the millions of diamond cutters on the globe, only 500 or so have the skill that the Hearts On Fire company demand to cut their diamonds (now there's a hard place to get a job in)!

Diamond-cutting lessons

The diamond wizard, Maarten de Witte, gave the guests a little lesson in diamond cutting 101, and the attentive class learned a few things about the trade. Sporting a diamond in his earring (talk about supporting your product), de Witte briefly explained the processes that diamonds go through from rough to the finished product. He described Hearts On Fire's use of technology to get their diamonds to the most minute specifications.

He showed a video of Victoria Secret models wearing Hearts' six-million dollar diamond bra (and it's Jamaican dollars folks). Then, amid trumpeted fanfare, the diamonds hitherto hidden in a veiled display case was revealed. The women led the way to the celestial selections, peering intently at their smoothness and being dazzled by their light.

Of course, these diamonds don't come cheap! Not that money was going to hinder those with the necessary purse strings.

Among the guests were Joseph A. Matalon and wife Bernadette; Sophia MaxBrown; Ann-Marie Chin; Brian George and Georgia Gray; James and Charlene Robertson; Tom and Rose Tavares-Finson; Xavier and Roma Chin; William Tavares-Finson; Janet Farrow and Bill Edwards; and Stephanie Scott.

Nicole Wong is already radiant, so add a few Hearts On Fire diamonds and the effect is doubled.
