Kay Anderson, president of the Jamaican Council for Adult Education (JACAE), and vice-principal of the Mico University College, has been elected as a vice-president of the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) with responsibility for the Caribbean region.
Her election took place at the annual general meeting of ICAE which was held as part of the seventh world assembly of adult education held in Nairobi, Kenya, last month. Paul Belanger of Canada was re-elected as president.
The sixth world congress of adult education had been held in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and the Ocho Rios Declaration was ratified at the recent congress. The eighth world congress will be held in Brazil in 2009.
Under the theme 'Adults to Learn: Convergence, Solidarity and Action', the assembly highlighted issues relating to literacy, the right to learn, poverty, citizen rights, and gender mainstreaming. A three-year strategic plan and platform for action for the international organisation was outlined.
Follow-up meeting
Locally, JACAE is planning a learning city conference for March 2008, as a follow-up to the learning city seminar held last year. This highlights the city as a learning space, where informal and formal learning is available to all.
JACAE operates a resource centre which offers computer classes to the public, and maintains a library on adult education materials. JACAE in conjunction with the Mount St. Vincent University mounts a degree programme in adult education which is currently recruiting its tenth cohort.
All interested in adult education, as volunteers, or in furthering their own levels of education are invited to attend the annual general meeting of JCAE which will be held during April at the Jamaica Library Service.
