For the past seven years, the United States Embassy in Jamaica has been showcasing the contributions African-Americans have been making to music. This year the trend will continue with 'Blues on the Greens', scheduled for February 23 on the lawns of Devon House.
Blues singer, Zora Young, will headline this year's concert. A.J. Brown and Dean Fraser will also perform.
"This is just a goodwill gesture between The United States and Jamaica, just an evening of good camaraderie," said the embassy's cultural affairs specialist, Angella Harvey.
Young is a contemporary blues singer. She is a 30-year veteran and has performed in North America, Italy, Germany and France, among other places.
While in Jamaica, she will be accompanied by guitarist, Maurice Gordon.
"I mandated it to make sure people come to the concert, no boundaries, no restriction. Once you start charging, you know there will be boundaries," Harvey said of the free concert.
The event may be free, but it is still expected that patrons will dress casually elegant for the affair. An estimated 3,000 patrons turned out last year and 1000 more are expected for this year.
In addition to the blues concert, the embassy, will also be hosting movies at RedBones the Blues Café to highlight the significance of African Americans.
