Simpson a safe bet for UTech award

SHERONE SIMPSON, the world's fastest woman, has been shortlisted for the University of Technology's (UTech) Sportswoman of the Year award.

The function will be held this evening starting with cocktails at 6:00 at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium. Simpson recently captured her first Jamaica Sportswoman of the Year award and should easily claim this prize.

She is up against Rosie Campbell (hockey), Geordine Henry (badminton), Melisa Davis (netball) and Nicola James (football).

Dominic Cover (squash), Emelio Mendez (badminton), Kadian Brown (hockey), Flagan Humes (football), Ryan Lincoln (Tae Kwon Do) and Andre Clark (track & field) are chasing the men's prize.

Special awards will also be presented to Shericka Williams, who ended the year ranked fourth in the 400m, Kaliese Spencer, the World Junior 400m hurdles champion, Asafa Powell, IAAF Male Athlete of the Year, Danny James, who coached the hockey team for four consecutive years, Stephen Francis, for outstanding coaching achievements, and Dr. Rae Davis, the immediate past president.

Gordon "Butch' Stewart, chief executive officer of Sandals Resorts International Limited, will be the guest speaker while Christopher Martin and Ibo Cooper will provide entertainment.
