WESTERN BUREAU:

South Africa's reggae star, Lucky Dube, will form part of an entertainment line-up that will descend on Falmouth, Trelawny, between March 10 and 11.

The announcement was made at the press launch of 'Brand Trelawny' at the Starfish Resort in the parish on Tuesday. Brand Trelawny, carrying the tagline Trelawny ... 18th Century Commercial Capital, 21st Century Sporting Arena', is geared to highlight and showcase the essence of the parish's food, culture and music during during the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Lucky Dube and the Drum Café will headline a lunch-hour concert in Water Square with Jamaica's internationally-acclaimed reggae group Third World; balladeer Richie Stephens, soca veteran Byron Lee and the Dragonaires, Nadine Sutherland and Sanchez, will also share the stage.

Showcasing history, talent

Billed as the One Love Concert, parish manager of the Social Development Commission, Omar Simpson said: "This will show our history and the various talents that the parish possesses."

Banking on what is expected to be a massive turnout in Water Square and the concern that some locals might not be able to watch the performances in close proximity to the stage, Brand Trelawny organisers will strategically place wide-screen televisions in and around the area to accommodate live, close-up viewing.

Lucky Dube made his first appearance on stage at Reggae Sunsplash in the early 1990s in Montego Bay, where he gave an impressive performance. He is revered by many Jamaicans and has a style similar to the late reggae crooner Peter Tosh.

Lucky Dube is also a favourite of the black community in the United Kingdom, primarily among Africans, black British nationals and Jamaicans, where his songs are thumped daily from the jukeboxes inside the Ridley Road Market in North London. And, for well over two decades, Third World has remained a favourite among Jamaicans and the wider international entertainment fraternity.
