Special tribute for great Worrell
published: Thursday | February 15, 2007

Frank Worrell ... cup match in his honour.

KINGSTON (CMC):

ICC CRICKET World Cup West Indies 2007 Inc. will pay tribute to late West Indies captain Sir Frank Worrell by dedicating one of the tournament matches to his memory.

This decision, made by CWC's board of directors last week, was announced by ICC CWC 2007 Managing Director & CEO, Chris Dehring, while addressing the West Indies Players' Association's (WIPA) annual awards ceremony on Monday night in Barbados.

Noting that the hosting of ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 "must be a celebration of all things West Indian", he told guests that such an event "cannot pass without honouring one of our great cricketers - I am speaking of none other than the legendary Sir Frank Worrell".

Dehring stated that a specific CWC game will be played in Sir Frank's memory. Further details will be forthcoming.

"We will be giving a fitting tribute to Sir Frank," affirmed the CWC managing director.

Speaking about the Outstanding Caribbean Citizens programme as well, he said it was appropriate that the achievements of the region's distinguished sons and daughters be lauded during the historic event.

All fields will be fêted

"We have incredible people in all fields and they will be fêted and entertained and shown across the world as examples of how great the Caribbean is. Their accomplishments will be highlighted so the world will know the quality of the people we have," stated Dehring.

Drawn from a variety of backgrounds - including literature, dance, art, academia, music and sports - honourees in the Outstanding Caribbean Citizens programme will be toasted for their contributions to their respective homelands and, where applicable, to the region in general," Dehring said.

"They will be saluted in various ways throughout the tournament, most significantly by being invited to present the Man-of-the-Match award after each game; an element of match day which is broadcast live internationally," he added.
