Arnett players injured in bus crash
published: Monday | February 12, 2007

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

Two Arnett Gardens players were injured in a motor vehicle on the Spanish Town by-pass, forcing a postponement of their Wtray and Nephew National Premier League game against Village United yesterday.

Striker Shane Edwards and defender Wayne Ellis suffered foot injuries, while the three passengers in a car with which it collided are considered serious and hospitalised.

About 10:30 a.m., the Arnett team was on the way to the Elliston Wakeland Centre in Trelawny when the bus collided with a car and was badly, damaged.

Glendon 'Admiral' Bailey, coach of Arnett Gardens, said he was not travelling in the team bus but was forced to turn back to the accident scene after receiving a phone call.

Said Bailey: "After I went there I don't know how it was not more detrimental, because the car overturn and write-off in a ditch. About two or three people were in there. I understand they are serious and in hospital.

"The bus almost overturn and couple of the ballers get 'jerk up'. Shane Edwards and Wayne Ellis got injuries to their feet. It was swell up and cut up. It could be worse, we just have to give God thanks," said Bailey.

Arnett Gardens, champions in 2001 and 2002, are currently fifth in the standings on 30 points from 20 games.

Over the years, several Jamaican footballers have been involved in motor vehicle accidents of which three were fatal. Stephen 'Shorty' Malcolm, Winston Anglin and Peter Cargill all succumbed to their injuries.
