Weapons for the underworld
published: Monday | January 29, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

THERE HAS been a lot said about the recent statement by Commis-sioner of Police, Lucius Thomas, regarding intelligence indicating stockpiling of weapons for election. I do believe that the intel-ligence community did get bits and pieces of information but their interpretation is what is questionable to me.

Large caches of weapons have been coming into Jamaica for quite some time, as evidenced by the find at the Kingston Wharf in 2005. We did not hear then that these were for election as no election was imminent. Instead, it was reportedly said they were for the criminal underworld.

From what I gathered, the weapons which have been coming into the country are not for a political war, but intended for the criminal masterminds who are anti-political. They have no respect for the rule of law, and are hell-bent on destroying what is left of the police force, as they believe that that is the only thing that is stopping them from achieving their objective, which is anarchy.

I am, therefore, calling on the Prime Minister as the Minister of Defence to move immediately to increase the strength of the police force by 40 per cent. Work with the private sector to provide mobility for the police. Triple the size of the intelligence agencies, even if they have to call upon some who have retired to assist for another two or three years until they train new operatives. Maintain visible, and sustained presence in the troubled communities.

I am, etc.,
