A matter of honour
published: Monday | January 29, 2007

THE EDITOR, Sir

WHAT IS the significance of anointing a citizen of a country Most Honourable? Is it that that citizen must be honoured above all other citizens? Is it that other citizens are least honourable under the law?

Honours should be bestowed upon a citizen for deeds well done and not for prestige of office. Honour bestowed should be for humanitarian purposes, justice, building of country and uplifting of people.

The practice is adopted from our former colonial masters as a psychological tool so people can be easily manipulated

A citizen who would jumps into the murky waters of the Rio Cobre at Flat Bridge to save a life deserves such honour that would shine like a beacon.

What Jamaica needs is good governance or a new government, less pomp and pride and fakery, intimidation and fancy speeches.

I am, etc.,

ROBERT SOLOMON HENRY
