published: Friday | December 15, 2006

Sarwan

GEORGETOWN (CMC):

West Indies players Shiv-narine Chanderpaul and Ram-naresh Sarwan have been included in a 27-man Guyana training squad chosen in preparation for the upcoming regional first class season which starts in January.

The national cricket selectors met Tuesday to select the squad which will be narrowed down to 14, before the KFC Cup and Carib Beer Series competitions bowl off.

National Under-19 players skipper Steven Jacobs, Gajanand Singh and Veersammy Permaul have all been included in the training squad. West Indies 'A' team batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon who has been advised to rest an injured foot until January 7, has also been included.

Ignored

Jacobs was the leading all-rounder in the 2006 regional Under-19 series while Singh scored the most runs and left-arm spinner Permaul captured the most wickets.

The top two off-spinners in the recent inter-county competition - Demerara's Zaheer Mohammed and Essequibo's Andrew Williams - have been ignored along with Under-19 batsman Norman Fredericks and the experienced Andre Percival.

Guyana face Windward Islands in their opening Carib Beer Series match in Grenada from January 4-7 before facing the same team in the KFC Cup one-day series on January 9.

Guyana are the defending regional one-day champions and reached the semi-finals of the Carib Beer four day competition this year.
