Football halted by malaria outbreak
published: Friday | December 15, 2006

Dr. Marion Bullock Ducasse - file

ALL football competitions in Jamaica have been put on hold.

In a release to parish associations, premier league clubs and its other affiliates yesterday, the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) said this decision has been taken because of the deadly malaria disease now affecting parts of the island.

Postponed until further notice

The JFF release said Director of Emergency Disaster Management and Special Services at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Marion Bullock-Ducasse, and the chairman of the federation's medical committee, Dr. Winston Dawes, have advised that all football competitions be postponed until further notice.

It added that the measure was precautionary as the disease can be spread where there are large gatherings.

Wednesday's matches in the National Premier League were postponed and the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association has also already taken a decision to postpone Saturday's second leg of the Olivier Shield.
