Bennett critical of poor shot selection at trial

SENIOR CRICKET team coach Junior Bennett blamed poor shot selections for the poor score by Gareth Breese's XI while he praised the efforts of Danza Hyatt and Simon Jackson who guided Tamar Lambert's XI to an impressive 10-wicket win in Wednesday's first Jamaica trial match at Chedwin Park.

"I am bit disappointed with the batting. I don't think Breese's batsmen applied themselves and, as a results of that, there were a lot of soft dismissals," Bennett said.

"It's definitely a lack of appli-cation because I think it was a good batting strip," continued Bennett, who watched Breese's XI fall 104 in 34 overs.

Though Hyatt and Jackson batted for almost 2 1/2 hours and 38.3 overs to get 105 to win, Bennett said that was not too much of a concern.

"I would not read too much into the overs," he said. However, he said Hyatt's 51, which came off 125 balls and Jackson's 43, which came off 101 balls, proved it was a good batting strip.

"They just came out and occupied the crease and got the runs needed for victory," said Bennett of Hyatt, who hit four fours and a six, and Jackson who struck four boundaries.

Apart from Brenton Parchment and Jamie Trenchfield with 27 each, no other batsman for Breese's XI made any significant score.

"We just have to continue to work at it (batting). People have to understand they are work to play first-class cricket and this is a trial match," added Bennett, who recently took over as Jamaica's senior team coach.

Bevon Brown with 4-21 off 10 overs was the most successful bowler for Lambert's XI. Oral Ranking (2-20) and Dennis Bulli (2-14) were also among the wickets.

The squad will now turn its attention to Sunday's one-day match against Lashings at the Trelawny multi-purpose facility.
