Canada trounce Jamaica 4-0
published: Friday | November 24, 2006

CARSON, California (AP):

CHRISTINE SINCLAIR had two goals on Wednesday night to help Canada trounce Jamaica 4-0 in the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup semi-finals and earn a berth at next year's World Cup.

Both the winner and the runner-up in the tournament get a berth in next September's World Cup in China.

Sinclair chested down a pass from Candace Chapman and fired a 10-metre shot to open the scoring in the 40th minute.

Rhian Wilkinson extended the lead in the 51st minute after Sinclair secured a loose ball, dribbled to the left and passed to Wilkinson, who scored from four yards.

Sinclair scored her 66th international goal in the 71st minute. After Kristina Kiss's 30-yard shot hit the crossbar, Sinclair pounced on the ball and converted the shot.

Melanie Booth sealed the win when she converted Wilkinson's deflected shot in the 88th minute.

Meanwhile, Abby Wambach scored twice and the United States beat Mexico 2-0 in their semi-final on Wednesday to also earn a berth in the 2007 World Cup and run their unbeaten streak to 31 games.

Spectacular header

The 26-year-old Wambach, notching her 66th goal in 83 appearances for the national team, gave the United States a two-goal pad when she scored on a spectacular glancing header in the 64th minute.

Kristine Lilly took the ball away from Elizabeth Patrica Gomez, dribbled down near the goal line on the left side and curled a left-footed pass toward the box. Wambach, just outside the near post, flicked her head to redirect the ball, and it looped over goalkeeper Sophia Perez and into the net.

Lilly also started the scoring sequence on the first goal with a pass from the top of the box to Carli Lloyd on the right side. Lloyd drove a shot that Perez dove to catch, but the ball slipped through her grasp. As she tried to reach and retrieve it, Wambach kicked it in.

Along with locking up a spot in next September's World Cup in China, the U.S. women set a national record for the longest unbeaten streak.

The U.S. and Canada each received byes into the Gold Cup semi-finals, which served as the regional qualifier for the World Cup. They will meet for the Gold Cup title on Sunday in Carson.

Mexico and Jamaica play in the third-place game, and the winner of that match will face Japan later in a two-match series for the final World Cup spot.
