I wish to draw attention to the recent building of a warehouse by a popular hardware merchant at 16 Burley Road, Eastwood Park Gardens, a supposedly residential community.
A trailer is most times parked overnight and hardware items, that is, pvc pipes, etc., are unloaded in the days for storage and eventual delivery.
The trailer has difficulty getting into the premises and takes hours to do so. In so doing, it holds up and prevents the free flow of traffic on the road. There was one particular trailer that attempted to enter the premises at about 4:00 p.m. on November 7, but only succeeded four hours later because of the narrowness of the road and entrance to the premises. This has led to the destruction of the sidewalks, which are mounted by the trailers.
Delayed
Residents are delayed in entering their premises because of the blockade. Potholes now form in the middle of the road. There is an unsightly limestone mound outside the entrance.
The height of the trailer and negligence of the drivers have felled telephone lines and dislocated electrical facilities. Two weeks ago C&W personnel had to be called in to restore services.
There are frequent security checks by a private security company for possible break-ins, thus increasing the security risk in the area. I am confident that the individual who unilaterally converted these premises into this industrial zone lives in a very privileged neighbourhood and would abhor such intrusion as an invasion of his privacy.
In better-run countries, they have proper zoning laws separating residential and commercial areas and these laws have teeth. Are we not deserving of these entitlements?
