At one point, it seemed that Candice Buchanan's career in entertainment was over, as she fell sick and could no longer dance. As time would prove, her future in entertainment was not only far from being over, but would eventually be as good as it gets. Today Buchanan, currently an entertainment host, producer and reporter on CVM-TV, is one of the most recognisable faces on Jamaican television.
How did you get started in the media?
I was working as an entertainment coordinator after studying dance. I got sick and then Keith Foote and Cheryl Levy from Reggae Sun told me that they could not pay me to work there, but I can work free for six months while I was learning about working in TV. They provided accommodation and after six months I learned a lot.
What is your dream job?
I was always a performer, but I ended up in media. I would like to have a major impact on the world. I want to have a legacy when I die.
What is your best moment working in the media?
I would have to say when I interviewed Lionel Ritchie for BET.
Have you been faced with negative remarks?
Oh God, so many! I don't want to bring up the negativity, though.
If not television, what would you be doing?
I would be singing, dancing or acting. I could not work outside the entertainment industry. I couldn't deal with the nine to five.
What are your favourite shows?
Real Time with Bill Maher, The Wire on HBO. I would sit and watch BBC World all day.
Who is your favourite television personality?
Larry King. He is a great interviewer.
What is one thing that people would be surprised to know about you?
I am extremely shy. You would never believe it. If I have to interview you I have to focus on you. Once you turn on me I start acting crazy.
What are some characteristics you look for in a partner?
I don't think he exists. He would have to be able to make me laugh. He would have to be secure in who he is. I like skinny men. Let me simplify it; kind, secure and he must respect me. Don't have to love me, just respect me (laugh).
Name the one person you would most want to meet.
Bill Clinton
