Recognising excellence...

The recipients of the 2006 Gleaner Honour Awards at the Jamaica Pegasus, in New Kingston, yesterday. - Ricardo Makyn/Staff Photographer.

Yesterday, the Gleaner Company recognised some of Jamaica's most outstanding individuals when the newspaper presented them with its prestigious Honour Award.

  • Asafa Powell was recognised for his achievements in sports;

  • William 'Billy' McConnell was saluted for his significant accomplishments in business;

  • Barbara Gloudon for arts and culture;

  • Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas, Deputy Commissioner Mark Shields and Assistant Commissioner Glenmore Hinds were hailed for their public service, specifically for their activities in the fight against crime and success in the suppression of the international drug trade in Jamaica;

  • Dr. Winston Clarke was awarded for health and wellness;

  • Dr. Peter Vogel for science and technology;

  • Lady Patricia Golding and Mark Golding for voluntary service; and

  • Popular DJ Sean Paul for entertainment.

  • A certificate of merit was presented to Thyra Heaven for voluntary service.
  • "Each year, we celebrate the brilliance, diligence and the spirit of our people," said Karin Cooper, the newspaper's corporate affairs manager who, along with editor-in-chief Garfield Grandison, was the master of ceremonies of yesterday's gala luncheon at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel, New Kingston.

    Youth awards

    Also at yesterday's event, the newspaper again presented its youth awards for excellence. They went to Racquel Whyte, top GSAT performer in 2006; Rosanna Pike, 2006 Spelling Bee Champion; Kevin Williams who received 10 distinctions in the 2006 CSEC examinations; and Daynea Wallock for maintaining an A average at the tertiary level.

    "The importance of youth development cannot be overstated, and our young achievers are standard-bearers for their peers," said Mr. Grandison. They represent our hope for a prosperous Jamaica."
