The Red Brigade, Boys' Town, put in an honest shift to come away with a 1-0 victory over Wadadah in Wray & Nephew Premier action at the Collie Smith Drive Sports Ground yesterday.
In slippery conditions due to intermittent showers, striker Peter Keyes netted the winning goal for Boys' Town in the 48th minute. He managed to get the better of Wadadah last man Andre Reid, before dribbling into the box to squeeze the ball into the back of the net, wide off the post and
barely out of the reach of Wadadah custodian Gavine Barrett.
Reid had found himself between Keyes and strike partner George Vernal and failed to get a header to a high, aerial clearance.
"We dominated the game for long periods but weren't consistent with our finishing," said Boys' Town coach Andrew Price.
WINNING WAYS
"But three points at home is always good and we had to get back to winning ways. When we play at home we must show some ascendancy," added Price, who saw his team pounded 1-4 by 2004 champions Portmore United in their previous home game.
Troy Dawes could have put the homesters even further ahead five minutes later. However, he swung fiercely but could not connect with a Garfield Gillespie cross, less than six yards from goal.
In stoppage time, substitute Delroy Burnett could have put his name on the scoresheet for Boys' Town, but finding himself alone at the back post, he headed a well-weighted cross whipped into the area powerfully over the crossbar.
OPPORTUNITY
While they had a fair amount of possession, Wadadah did not look decisive in the final third. Their best opportunity of the game fell to Sion Thorpe but his long-range effort was pushed over the bar by Boys' Town custodian Kirk Porter.
While acknowledging that his team could have benefitted from sharper finishing, it is their defensive presence which is a concern to Wadaddah coach Anthony Williams.
"Right now our defending is a liability to us. We have just been giving up goals every game, just presenting the forwards with opportunities," he said.
"If we can't change that we are going to have a lot of problems. But we are working on it and right now we are looking at shifting a few players around," he added.
