Students need overhead bridge
published: Monday | November 6, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

I am writing as a concerned citizen and as a past student of the Herbert Morrison Technical High and the Montego Bay Community College, in the wake of Thursday's unfortunate mishap, where a student of the Montego Bay Community College was hit by a motorist on the Alice Eldemire Drive and succumbed to her injuries.

I am impressed to recommend that the principals of both institutions and the Ministry of Education liaise with the relevant authorities for the construction of an overhead bridge at the four-way intersection on the Alice Eldemire Drive to serve both institutions. This will allow for free passage of students and alleviate any contact with motorist on the busy highway. I am also confident that this will eliminate any future eventualities.

In the meantime, I would like to serve a note of caution to motorists to be cognisant that there are two schools in the vicinity of the highway, hence it is inevitable that students a will use the thoroughfare therein and in the absence of a pedestrian crossing or an overhead bridge, motorists are entreated to be mindful of other commuters in this area.

I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the bereaved family and the Montego Bay Community College family.

I am, etc.,

JENNIFER SCOTT-BARRETTE
