Legend of Scarface upsets in 3-y-o feature
published: Sunday | November 5, 2006

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

IN THE absence of a trophy race at Caymanas Park yesterday, the 3-y-o Restricted Stakes over 1100 metres resulted in a stunning upset, the winner LEGEND OF SCARFACE returning odds of 55-1.

One of two winners for star apprentice Carlton Malcolm, the chestnut colt from the stables of Robert Darby Jr. won by 1 1/2 lengths from 7-2 chance TWENTY NINE under Hall of Fame jockey Charles Hussey with another 1 1/4 lengths to the fast-finishing 7-5 favourite, CLASSY BOY PETE with champion jockey Brian Harding riding for 14-time champion trainer Philip Feanny.

ROBIN'S BAY (12-1) showed superior speed in the 12-strong field to lead from LEGEND OF SCARFACE as they sorted themselves out, followed by PRINCESS SUE, TWENTY NINE and LAW LORD, with the well-backed COMMANDING LIGHT (Wesley Henry up) and CLASSY BOY PETE failing to go the early pace.

ROBIN'S BAY turned for home with LEGEND OF SCARFACE challenging strongly on the outside and after a brief duel, 'Scarface' gained the ascendancy approaching the distance to win decisively from TWENTY NINE, staying on well in the closing stages with CLASSY BOY PETE motoring late, obviously find the trip a trifle short.

The Feanny-trained JET BLASTER, Trevor Simpson's intended mount, was declared a late non-starter (lame), while stable companion LAW LORD broke down badly after the race and might never race again as his right foreleg was in bad shape.

Down on Luck

Feanny has not been having the best of luck with his horses lately. His sparingly-raced 3-y-o colt MINISTER ON FIRE broke a leg at exercise late last month and had to be put down, while FIRE WORKS snapped a leg and fell leaving the quarter pole in last Wednesday's Merry Deal Cup feature won by stable companion DIESEL and suffered the same fate.

And if that wasn't enough, A KING IS BORN, who had been undergoing preparations for next Saturday's Red Stripe Caribbean Sprint, broke down at exercise (cracked a sesamoid bone) on Wednesday morning, ruling out a return to active competition. His owner, Howard Hamilton, said the 2003 Derby winner and Horse of the Year will resume stud duties at HAM Stables after winning 21 races (from 27 starts) and $10.1 million in stakes in a truly outstanding racing career.

Breeders' cup

On a day when CTL beamed the Breeders' Cup races live from Churchill Downs in Kentucky, in-form apprentice riders Malcolm (Legend of Scarface, High Roller) and Javour Simpson (Attitude and 16-1 chance Rio Bueno) had two winners each.

Trainers Linton Calder (Attitude, Rio Bueno) and Andrew McDonald (High Roller, Mambo at 10-1) shared the honours with two winners as well.

Meanwhile, highly-fancied PROPOINT, ridden by Ricardo Duhaney and KAZ HO ME with Keloni Richards aboard, won the respective sections of the CTL Exercise Riders' races over 800 metres straight.

Midweek racing takes a break to pave the way for the big Superstakes meet next Saturday.
