Digicel buys UMobile

Digicel Group, has acquired the Guyanese mobile operator U Mobile, from Trans World Telecommunications.

The mobile phone company, which had its start in Jamaica five years ago, is now in 22 markets ranging across the Pacific, South and Central America and the Caribbean.

Digicel Guyana's operation will be headed by Tim Bahrani, "a senior executive who has more than 11 years experience in mobile telecommunications management," said the mobile group. Bahrani has worked previously with Celtel and Millicom International.

The Guyana buy adds 119 new employees to Digicel's payroll.
