Fabulous four-timer for Simpson
published: Sunday | October 29, 2006

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

TITLE-CHASING jockey Trevor 'Slicer' Simpson enjoyed his best day in the saddle for some time when he booted home four winners in a row at Caymanas Park yesterday.

The five-time champion jockey thus left himself with an outside chance of catching long-time leader and defending champion Brian Harding in the jockeys' championship.

Harding, meanwhile, failed to ride a winner on the 10-race programme and will miss Wednesday's mid-week programme. The Trinidadian has so far ridden 76 winners, Simpson and Wesley Henry are tied on 67 with Charles Hussey on 59.

Simpson's winners were the 8-5 favourite ANOTHER RANKING in the sixth race over 1200 metres, 2-1 chance MUSICAL MAESTRO for trainer Dwight Chen in the seventh race over 1200 metres for open allowance horses, BANJUHAR (7-2) in the eighth over 1400 metres and the evens favourite ROYAL RUN for champion trainer Wayne DaCosta in the ninth race over 1600 metres for overnight allowance horses.

Worked Overtime

Simpson had to work overtime in order to win on all four, bringing MUSICAL MAESTRO with a sustained run on the outside to catch and beat the 1-2 favourite EXPLOSIVE PEAK (Wesley Henry up) in a driving finish. Simpson was also required to work hard aboard ROYAL RUN, as the seven-year-old gelding was outpaced passing the half mile at which stage top weight JUST SOME THOUGHTS (6-1) led narrowly from PASSA PASSA.

But ROYAL RUN found his legs on entering the straight, going by JUST SOME THOUGHTS a furlong out, but had to be driven out to win by a neck as the runner-up rallied late on the inside.

DaCosta had a second winner on the card in smart two-year-old debutante NATURALLY ROYAL (2-5 fav) who romped the fourth race over 1100m with Hussey up, despite encountering traffic problems at the half mile. Anthony 'Baba' Nunes also saddled two winners in BANJUHAR and the 22-1 outsider LADY INDIRA. in the opening race for two-year-olds.
