A world of opportunities
published: Sunday | October 29, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

Recently, I saw a letter published in The Gleaner titled 'The futility of Job Hunting in Jamaica.'

Let me say that should the author of this letter reflect on the level of the candidates our universities are producing, we are in a sad state of affairs in Jamaica.

This, apparently young lady claims it is unfair for positions to be filled through so-called 'links.' Well, I give you credit for learning that the world is not fair. It is a fact of life so accept it now or face extinction.

If it is through links that jobs are filled, then go out and make some links. Chances are if you were paying attention to some of those sites you were trashing, like splashjamaica.com for example, you would realise that the website does tell you that some jobs are filled without being advertised.

SplashJamaica.com goes even further to tell you how to find them. I leave it up to you to do your research.

We must understand that job hunting is a skill to be learnt just as how you would learn to ride a bike or learn to read a book. If you are not getting results, try evaluating yourself. Go to seminars, on the Internet, or buy a book that gives you tips and training for job hunting.

We must stop blaming companies for being unfair. Chances are if you are going to hire a helper to live in your house while you are not there, you would hire someone you know over someone you have no idea who they are, besides the fact that they have a piece of paper saying that they are qualified.

It is the same with someone trusting a person to do a good job in a vacant position they have open. When you realise that you can't change the world around you but it would be so much easier to change yourself and adapt, you would have learnt to evolve and avoid extinction.

I leave you with the words of Robert Nesta Marley: 'In the abundance of water, only the fool is thirsty.'

I am, etc.,

ANDRE BENJAMIN
