Grand Lido Braco are domino champs
First-time entrants and underdogs Grand Lido Braco Resort and Spa were crowned champions of the 2006 Western Hotels Sports Association All-island domino competition after beating former champions Rose Hall Resort and Country Club 202-197 in the final played at Rio Bueno in Trelawny.
Having already won the netball and football championships, Grand Lido Braco Resort and Spa got off to a sluggish and nervous start and at one stage were trailing 23-18.
Strategic table changes by Captain Burchell Henry, who opted not to play but managed the tables and players from the sidelines, saw the new champions take their first lead at 38-37 and went into the half- time break leading 105-97.
The last 20 minutes of the encounter were the most crucial and nerve-wracking and not for the faint hearted as Rose Hall powered their way to an amazing 192-184 lead and seemed set to cop their fifth title overall, as dejection set in on the Braco supporters and their players. However, a key table switch and change of pairs by Henry slowed Rose Hall's progress and at 197-196 in favour of Braco, the countdown was signalled by the referee and Braco prevailed with five more victories to Rose Hall's solitary win.
"We knew we were up against a quality team," stated Henry, who when asked why he chose not to play in the most important match of the competition, said it was more beneficial to his team for him to observe his opponents playing strengths at the various tables and effect changes when he saw fit and it paid off, especially in the latter stages of the match.

'Do or die' for community teams
Its do-or-die for the eight remaining teams in the Social Development Commission's National Community Cricket Championship. The preliminary round of the national phase, which was played on a round-robin basis with each team playing three matches in groups of four and the best two teams qualifying for the Super Eight or the quarter-finals, came to a close last week. From now on all matches will be played on a knockout basis.
The eight teams (representing their respective parishes) are Lakes Pen (St. Catherine), Granville (Trelawny), Annotto Bay (wild-card entrant), Race Course (Clarendon), Broughton (Westmoreland), Sherwood Forrest (Portland), Lititz/Comma Pen (St. Elizabeth) and Heatease (St. Thomas).
They will square off against each other (in the order listed above) in the battle for supremacy of the champion community team, a substantial cash prize and tickets to a match in the 2007 Cricket World Cup are up for grabs.
The quarter-final matches will be played later this month at Vere Technical and Alpart Sports Club. Two matches will be played at each location.
The parish phase of the championship began in June with 16 teams in each parish vying for the parish title and $100,000 for each parish winner. The 14 winners plus two wild-card entrants comprised the 16 teams at the national phase of the championship.
