Nafees' hundred flattens Zimbabwe
published: Saturday | October 14, 2006

Bangladesh's Shahriar Nafees celebrates after completing his century during their match against Zimbabwe during the ICC Champions Trophy cricket tournament in Jaipur, yesterday.

MUMBAI, India (CMC)

Shahriar Nafees smashed a Bangladesh record hundred and propelled his side to a huge 101-run victory over Zimbabwe in their International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy qualifying series match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium yesterday.

Sent to bat, Bangladesh compiled 231 for six off their 50 overs and then ripped out the Africans for 130 in 44.4 overs to easily win the battle of the minnows in the four-team qualifying series.

Top-of-the-table West Indies and Sri Lanka will clash in a battle of unbeaten teams in the last game today to decide the qualifying series winners.

Highest Bangladesh ODI

For Bangladesh, Nafees belted 17 fours and one six in a splendid 123 not out, the highest one-day international (ODI) score ever by a Bangladesh batsman.

The left-handed opener carried his bat through the innings and also became the first Bangladesh batsman to score two ODI hundreds.

Zimbabwe were valiant in the field but Bangladesh's allround game proved decisive and they won handsomely to win the bottom-of-the-table match.

Saqibul Hasan (36) and Habibul Bashar (30) supported the blazing knock by Nafees, while opening bowlers Ed Rainsford (2-41) and Anthony Ireland (2-45) shared four wickets for Zimbabwe.

Wicket-keeper/batsman Brendan Taylor led Zimbabwe's reply with 52 as left-arm spinners Saqibul Hasan (3-18), Abdur Razzak (2-12) and Mohammed Rafique 2-26) combined to stifle their run chase.
