    PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP):

Trinidad has extradited a man to the United States charged in the slaying of a Nevada beauty pageant winner, a spokesman for Trinidad's attorney general said yesterday.

David Winfield Mitchell, 60, was sent back to Nevada on Thursday to face a murder charge for the 1982 killing of Sheila Harris, the then-reigning Miss Douglas County, said David West of the attorney general's office.

Mitchell, a Trinidad native who led a quiet life in Port-of-Spain and lived with his teenage daughter, was arrested in August after a review of DNA evidence linked him to the killing. A local magistrate ruled to extradite Mitchell on September 4.

To date this year, there have been 91 accidents accounting for the 109 deaths, 16 of which were children.

    HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC):

Bermuda's Deputy Premier Ewart Brown resigned from the Cabinet on Thursday to fight for the leadership of the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) and the country at the party's annual conference later this month.

Brown, who stepped down as Tourism and Transport Minister, told a news conference his leadership would take Bermuda to the next level.

Premier Alex Scott Scott was not immediately available for comment.

  • Lawyers contest arrest warrant

    HAMILTON, Bermuda (AP):

Lawyers for a Dutch oil trader sought by European authorities investigating an elaborate tax fraud scam have appealed a warrant for his arrest, challenging the Netherlands' authority to seek the billionaire's extradition from Bermuda.

The warrant issued for John Deuss cites concerns about possible money laundering, stolen property, and a criminal organisation, but the 64-year-old tycoon has not been charged.
