St George's too strong for Cumberland
published: Friday | September 29, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

GOAL-HUNGRY spectators had to wait until deep into the second half to see St. George's finally push their way to a 4-0 win over bottom-placed Cumberland in Group E of the ISSA/Pepsi/JN Manning Cup at Winchester Park yesterday.

After countless missed opportunities for the home team, midfielder Orville Anderson finally broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute when he fired low, hard and to the left of Cumberland custodian Latroy Blackwood after receiving a short corner from flank-man Shammar Shelton. Judmair Holloway, who had an excellent game for the North Street team, deservedly put them two up in the 65th minute when he headed powerfully past Blackwood at the far post from an Anderson free kick.

Haldaine James, who had been the culprit of quite a few missed opportunities, made amends with a 70th-minute strike from close range before substitute Mario Lewis snuck into the area to beat Blackwood from four metres away to close out the scoring.

Important points

"What was important today was the three points," St. George's coach, Everold Campbell, said. "We told them not to worry about the goals, the goals took long to come, but we got the three points," he said. "If we keep getting three points from here on, we will qualify for the next round."

St. George's join defending champions Calabar on six points, but remain in third place on goal difference. The game between Calabar and fourth place Oberlin had to be called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
