Not a crash programme
published: Friday | September 29, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

For weeks, all we could hear about in the press was the lack of readiness for Cricket World Cup 2007. This reader totally agreed. Our Mayor, Desmond McKenzie, wrote ad nauseam about how dirty the city is and how much we need to put in place some clean-up measures over the next six months.

Finally, somebody in Govern-ment responded. Madam Prime Minister informed us on Sunday that the Government has made available $635 million to clean up the island in time for Cricket World Cup 2007.

Crash programme

One would have thought that this would find favour with the media. Instead, all I have heard since, is how the Prime Minister has launched a crash programme. For God's sake, what is it? Do we need to clean up the island or not? Be objective for goodness sake. Make up your minds. Either the mayor was right and the city needed help or he was wrong. If anybody can explain to me how the city was going to be made ready without hiring people to do the work - please explain to me. The Prime Minister has NOT launched a crash programme, she has made funds available to clean up the island in time for the ICC World Cup 2007. Do you see the difference?

P.S. I was about to send off this letter when I noticed in both morning newspapers, a picture of Andrew Holness stretching his hand to shake Rev. Blair's. How misleading! Anyone who watched the television news last night, would have seen that it was Rev. Blair who first stretched his hand to shake that of the MP, and it was Andrew Holness who refused.

I am, etc.,

Tired of media campaigning
