The Editor, Sir:
Whoever made the gargantuan mistake of making the canal from the Great Pond to the sea in Treasure Beach four times as big as was necessary, seems to have walked away from the problem.
Instead of an 8' chasm as was recommended, this 30' wide and in some places as deep, hole, is now sitting there as it was, with the raw sides slowly eroding in each rain thereby increasing the problem.
Of course it is easy to see why the project has come to a full stop as imagine the cost of cementing up this unnecessarily huge cavern when a little one, that would have adequately done the job of releasing the flood waters from the road and the low-lying houses in Great Bay, could have been finished by this.
I see that a load of steel has been dropped. This is encouraging. However, the date that the work on the canal was due to start is now long past.
This letter is a reminder that no work whatsoever has been done on the canal which should have been finished by now, and the October rains are just days away.
I am, etc.,
