'Update laws to enhance press' - Dr. David McBean Chairman, Media Association Jamaica
published: Thursday | September 28, 2006

MCBEAN

"A major plank on which the spread of information is based is the application of laws and regulations. Jamaica is among countries that are highly rated for their free press. It could only be to Jamaica's credit if we could better our current rating, and it is therefore timely that we place greater focus on the need to carefully review and update the laws that quite often provide an obstacle to that achievement.

"Of interest also is the introduction of the use of the wire service defence and other mechanisms that would allow the press greater flexibility in reporting on matters of public import. Any review should also seek to recognise the changing profile of the technologies available for the dissemination of information.

"The right to information is so integral to a democracy and to the continued enjoyment of human rights that we should urgently proceed with the necessary deliberations and activities that will result in a more informed and educated people."
