FORMER CHAMPIONS Norman Manley and Camperdown registered convincing victories in their ISSA/Pepsi/JN Manning Cup matches yesterday at the National Stadium.
Norman Manley thrashed Donald Quarrie 7-1 in the curtain raiser of a five-game, all-day football fest and that performance was then surpassed by Camperdown who belted Kingston High 8-0 in the following game.
Andre Bailey (first, fourth, seventh and 51st minutes) struck four times for Norman Manley. He was ably supported by Norman Bailey who struck a brace (45th and 90th), and Gavin Douglas (78th). Richard Lopez got the consolation goal for Donald Quarrie in the 75th minute.
Hat-trick
In game two of the massive Stadium fixture, John-Ross Edwards produced a hat-trick (12th, 65th and 68th) in helping Camperdown to their whipping of Kingston High.
Joel Williams (32nd), Shaun Francis (62nd), Rasheed Dwyer (73rd), Vernal Smart (79th) and Ramone Waite (84th) also scored for Camperdown who won their second straight game.
Barrington 'Cobra' Gaynor, coach of Camperdown, was naturally pleased with his team's performance.
"This is a very good victory for my team today because, for the most part, we played well," Gaynor said.
"Although we made some mistakes defensively, we were not punished today because we were playing against a weak team," he said.
"We are now going to work on that for the rest of our games," he said.
Curtis McKenzie, coach of Kingston High, said: "We started training last week with a fairly young team because of [disciplinary] reasons, so we weren't
prepared for a team like Camperdown at this stage."
Meanwhile, a brace by Andre Campbell and another goal from Kenardo Foster carried Jonathan Grant to a 3-0 beating of St. Catherine High at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.
Dominated from the onset
Jonathan Grant dominated from the onset and by the fifth minute, they were duly rewarded when Campbell beat his marker and scored. That effort was doubled in the 39th minute when Foster collected a pass in the 18-yard box, outjumped the St. Catherine defence and headed home, making it 2-0.
Upon resumption in the second half, Jonathan Grant continued where they left off with constant dribbling from Campbell, Foster, Chevaughn Oneil, Olander Stewart and company.
Campbell, in particular, could not be contained and, having collected the ball on the left flank in the 78th minute, beat a sea of defenders and sealed the issue.
