In just over an hour yesterday morning, the Jamaica Broilers Group handed out cheques totalling $650,250.00 to 41 GSAT and tertiary students, to assist with their tuition fees and textbooks for the next school year, beginning September. All the recipients are children of employees of the various companies within the Jamaica Broilers Group.

Thirty-four of the students each received a full scholarship valued at $25,500 for those attending tertiary institutions and $13,500 for those heading to high school, while the remaining seven got half scholarships. Thirteen GSAT students will be entering high school in September; 15 are high school students who are moving to a higher grade, while 13 are tertiary students.

Before presenting the students with their cheques at a ceremony in the Jamaica Broilers Group boardroom at McCook's Pen, Dr. Claudette Cooke, vice-president, public relations and human resource development, challenged them to reflect on the opportunities which have opened up to them as a result of the financial assistance given by the company and the support they have been receiving from their parents - most of whom were present.

Dr. Cooke called on the Jamaica Broilers Group Scholarship recipients to be the kind of students that their peers would want to emulate and to practice the principles and standards for which the Group stands.

Students challenged

The Jamaica Broilers executive challenged the students to study hard so they can make a real contribution to their family unit and, by extension, the community and the nation.

"We are not looking for superstars, but students who show a pattern of improvement throughout the school year," she said.

Students must maintain an average grade of 70 per cent and over throughout the school year in order to qualify for a full scholarship from the Jamaica Broilers Group.

Among the other Jamaica Broilers Group personnel who participated in the presentation ceremony were: Charmaine Silvera, group human resource manager; Karlene Sutherland, group human resource administrator and Nicole Marshall-Walker, group public relations and training officer.
