BEIRUT (AP):
Hezbollah said yesterday it had fired a second round of Khaibar-1 rockets on the central Israeli town of Afula, south of Haifa.
The announcement came hours after the guerrillas struck deeper into Israel than ever before, landing Khaibar-1s near Beit Shean and between towns in the West Bank. Israel, which claims the rocket is Iranian-made, confirmed the hit on Beit Shean, about 70 kilometres (42 miles) south of the Lebanese border, and said at least seven people were wounded.
Barrage of rockets
A Hezbollah statement broadcast on its Al-Manar TV said the guerrillas also fired a new barrage of rockets at the Israeli seaside town of Acre, north of Haifa. Acre has a large Arab population.
On the ground, the statement reported "fierce battles with an enemy unit on the eastern entrance of the village of Aita al-Shaab, trying to infiltrate the area."
It said the guerrillas destroyed an Israeli tank in the area, and were preventing Israeli troops from retrieving the tank and some wounded soldiers.
