While sweet stuff is not the ideal thing for me to eat, there is nothing quite like a good Jamaican bulla!
I don't like it with pear, or cheese or butter like I see some persons do it - just the plain bulla is enough for me!
Some have a little more ginger, some have a strong taste of banana; but they all have that sweet, yet floury taste that keeps you satisfied.
I like them because they are not too sweet as other treats, and don't just get soft in your mouth.
First taste
I was introduced to bulla as a mere lad when my father used to bring the little holey bullas (imagine a donut-shaped bulla) from Portland on his trips.
Later on, I got a taste of the big, cocoa bread-shaped ones which more people would be familiar with.
Wherever in Jamaica I've been to and no matter what that area's bakeries might produce other-wise, I always try the bullas!
Hard to say who has the best bulla in Jamaica, but I will say I prefer those with a fairly strong taste of ginger in them.
Bullas must also be tough, but not enough to break your jaws!
