I have an addiction to coffee. I have been really busy at work these past months and I have been using it to keep me awake in the mornings since I work from 8:00 a.m. to 11: 00 p.m.
Even though I feel my heart beating faster when I drink it, I do every day, but then I began to have a need for it. Coffee. Not weed or cigarette but coffee. The craving got me thinking that there is no way I could be addicted to it. Not me.
But then I was wrong, the first day I tired to go without it I got a little headache, I thought that it was nothing so I had some. So two days after I tried to stop, again and got a severe headache. It felt like a migraine. I had the urge for caffeine. The kind you get when you are short of breath; I needed coffee. I drank it, the satisfaction felt like a climax. Aaahhhhh, coffee the caffeine against my lips, what a relief!
Then I tried again to stop. The migraine started like a hammer - bang, bang; it was trying to shoot me down. So I took a little sip and I could feel the headache going away.
But the next day didn't win. I bore the pain, jus like a woman bears it during labour. The hammer began its banging but I won on this day.

An addiction to hard drugs can be fatal, but have you ever considered that there are many persons who are food addicts? They just have to have a cup of coffee several times daily, something sweet like chocolate, a special fruit or ice cream. It does not matter the time of day or night, it could be in church, at a business meeting or alone in the privacy of their rooms, food addicts must get their fix.
If you are such a person share your story in our new Food Addicts Anonymous (FAA) series. Tell us the food you absolutely cannot live without. Email us at: Lifestyle@gleanerjm.com.
