HAITI: Annan visits Port-au-Prince
published: Thursday | August 3, 2006

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (CMC):

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan is visiting Port-au-Prince on Wednesday to meet Haitian authorities on measures to be taken to improve security and revive the country's weak economy.

Haitian authorities plan to use the opportunity of the UN Secretary General's visit to discuss issues such as the review of the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti as well as how the country could adapt to the new security and economic challenges facing the Caribbean country.

Annan will meet President Rene Preval, Prime Minister Jack Edward Alexis and other government officials as well UN representatives and foreign diplomats stationed here.

Annan will address parliament on Thursday before leaving the Haitian capital for the neighbouring Dominican Republic for meetings with authorities there.

Annan is scheduled to join President Rene Preval for a news conference at the presidential palace on Wednesday afternoon.
