The Editor, Sir:
Regarding the letter 'Let us face reality' by Damion Evans, July 28, the reality is that even if Jamaicans are highly sexual people, this does not give one the license to engage in unnatural sex, that is, sex outside of marriage, masturbation, homosexuality, etc. Those who think otherwise are the ones living in denial. Common sense tells us that the acceptance of condoms will lead to irresponsible, permissive sex. Statistics also prove this.
Even a person of little sense will recognise how permissive our western society has become since the pill came on the market back in the swingin' sixties. It is a fact of life that condoms have been a major cause of AIDS and has led to it becoming an epidemic in some places.
I have visited Jamaica and was struck by the strong religious convictions among its people. I have faith in Jamaicans who know how to live a strong moral life.
The only moral and viable way of preventing AIDS is through abstinence and this should be taught and promoted with great rigour and moral zeal through the media, school system and government.
I am, etc.,
