Dressing for the part
published: Monday | July 31, 2006

The movie The Devil Wears Prada is still showing at Palace Amusement cinemas so you have time to catch it. One of the best elements of this film is the clothing and viewers will not miss the point that it is important to dress to impress. Especially so after you have landed the job. So, here are some tips to help you become politically correct as you prepare to strut your stuff along corporate corridors.

1. Dress for the job

Begin to act as if you already have it. Begin by upgrading shoes in need of new tips or that have scuff marks. Invest in some navy pieces. The quickest way to get hired is to act the part. In the words of Nigel, creative director in the above movie, "It's not about inner beauty."

2. Cultivate a Network

The jobs everyone would die for are rarely advertised and in order to know people, you have to meet people. So, since people in the know are hard to meet, get pen and elegant stationery (emails don't work here), then send notes to people you admire in the industries you want to enter. Ask for advice and 15 minutes of their time, take their advice, follow up, stay in touch and you will be surprised how many such people are interconnected.

3. Never Take it Personally

Remember - it's business, the job and the task at hand - it's not about you. Develop the habit of not taking what co-workers say personally and you will soon cultivate a professional demeanour that is eminently hireable. Be cool and remember to breathe!

4. Set Goals and Have a Vision

Make short and long-wterm goals for your future; get excited about the big picture. Make lists, collect inspirational ideas and work weekly, monthly and yearly towards your goal.

5. Have a Prudent Reserve

Smart men and women have a prudent reserve - otherwise known as a separate savings account with two months' salary in it. Just in case! This makes you sleep at nights and able to take risks on the career path. This enables you to study further, buy the right clothes, books and get the right look for the great new opportunity.

6. Cultivate Personality: Travel Widely, Plan Weekends and Read the Latest Books:

Plan your future, be aware of the steps to the great job, keep yourself informed of the latest trends in your field. Treat your life like a huge adventure.

7. Order Steak

The job that everyone would kill for means you are playing with the big boys now. Unless you are a vegetarian, order steak at business lunches. Please note girls: Men wearing suits appreciate a woman who is not afraid to eat.
