WESTERN BUREAU:
THE ISLANDWIDE power outage was only a minor interruption to the high voltage 60th birthday party that New York-based Jamaican real estate broker Marie Glispy had.
Glispy and a host of '60s friends who travelled from Washington D.C, Hartford, Connecticut; Miami and Tampa, Florida; Toronto, Canada; Nassau, Bahamas and party capital Kingston, commenced her 'sunset to sunrise' soiree with two standby generators and a galaxy of heavenly stars.
July 15 was calendared as a night of a full moon, however, the astronomical body never even showed its head.
But those who left their homes in the dark came bent on re-living the days when Winston Blake of Merritone Disco was their hero and the latest dance moves at the famous Copa Cobana were neither a 'hit or miss.'
Red and white draped tables were laid out beautifully around the property, equipped to seat at least 300 people. At 10:00 p.m., Marie Glispy was still in two minds uneasy about the outage and confident that her true friends would make it to her reunion.
Breakfast, scheduled for 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, was being prepared at the back of the villa, while dinner which was obviously prepared for the 'feeding of the thousands' was about to be served. Winston Blake was wearing his signature white shoes, which meant he was ready to rock, but two generators and a galaxy of stars were not enough for the powerful sound system.
Then at 11:00 p.m., it was as if God had said, 'Let there be light' as power returned. Veronica Lovindeer, who is back in Jamaica, lost no time in digging into a slice of rich, creamy, delicious potato pudding.
Her sidekick Judith Douglas was at her peak giving pointers on the names of good and reasonably-priced red wines, while party animal, a tired Dollis Campbell Williams, was ready to make a beeline for the comfortable Middle Eastern gazebo lounge that Glispy's party designer had created.
Former deputy director of tourism marketing, Basil Smith, flew in from The Bahamas and tried unsuccessfully to be the official photographer. His skills were upstaged by ace photographer, commentator, all-rounder Jerry Small.
Glispy's children Michele and Fahris were their mother's keeper. Friends Moveta Munroe, Norma Syndenham, Dorothy Grant Longshaw, Teddy and Betty McDonald, Norma Dell Rose, Carol DeSouza, Stephanie Harrison, Constance Blackwood Evans, Dahlia Francis, Dr. Dudley Chin, Fay Bartlett, Serena Percy, Sandra Paju Wilson, Carol and Earl Whyte, Judy Hamilton, Norman Hamilton and Barbara Mockyen, Michele Colton and Michael Lewis, Tom Scarlett, Owen Tibby, Carolyn Cooper and and Michele Thames, were among the guests.
