published: Sunday | July 23, 2006

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:

TWO OF three men who engaged the police in a shoot-out were shot and killed by the lawmen, who seized one 9-millimetre pistol with several live rounds. A policeman was also injured in the incident.

The dead men have been identified as Cavell Henry, 22-year-old labourer of Rivoli, Spanish Town. The other man has not been identified up to press time.

CAR CRASH

The Sunday Gleaner learnt that about 3:30 p.m. yesterday, police from the Spanish Town Police Station received reports that a Nissan Bluebird motor car with several armed men, were in the Lauristan area. A police party proceeded to the location and upon arrival, spotted a vehicle fitting the description and signalled it to stop. An occupant of the vehicle started to fire at the police. The car then crashed near a church and two of the men ran from the vehicle, still firing.

One of the men escaped, while the other, later identified as Henry, was found still clutching a gun. He was taken to hospital were he and the unidentified man succumbed to their injures. The injured policeman, who was shot in his knee, remains a patient in hospital.

The seizure of this gun brings to 50 the total confiscated by the St. Catherine North Police, since the start of the year.
