Concerned about PSOJ silence on toll issue
published: Sunday | July 23, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE FOLLOWING letter has been sent to the president of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica:

I hereby state my concerns on the deafening silence of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) body with regards to the toll charges on the Portmore leg of Highway 2000.

In 1962, our first Prime Minister, Sir Alexander Bustamante, when asked how he planned to finance the country's affairs, his response was: "Those who can pay will have to pay."

This kind of Highway 2000 development is certainly a landmark of great importance. However, we also dare not deny the unspoken benefits of our workers getting to and from work in a good mindset and on time. These are very important and essential ingredients to profit.

Medallion Hall Hotel will, with immediate effect, pay 50 per cent of the toll costs to and from work for five days per week for each of its staff that lives in the Portmore environs. In addition, we will be paying any reasonable bus fare cost to and from Portmore for our staff members.

It is our fervent prayer that good sense will prevail among the private and commerce sectors to act in the best interest of their staff and assist them with the toll cost to and from work; as in the long run we will be the true beneficiaries. It must be remembered that those of us who have to provide the tax department with our audited financial report would be able to claim this as a cost of operation. In order to prevent any tax abuse, the names and addresses of all our workers who will be benefiting will be made available to the relevant departments.

I am, etc.,

GLEN V. BROMFIELD,

O.D., J.P.
