Astley Chin shares his secrets
published: Sunday | July 23, 2006

ASTLEY CHIN, one of Jamaica's top professional photographers, will be sharing his secrets and know-how in a series of photography workshops for local photography enthusiasts.

Having had 50 years of extensive experience both here and in New York, running his own studios, and with a vast background in special assignments, news, and all aspects of the profession, Astley returned to Jamaica to settle in Retreat, St. Mary, his hometown, where he set up his studio and black and white custom photo lab.

As a perfectionist in the field of photography, he has established himself over the years as a master of photojournalism, executive and family portraits, advertising and public relations photography.

As a former staff photographer of the Daily Gleaner, he has covered such assignments as the visits of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, Queen Elizabeth II, and many other heads of state and important visitors to our island.

He was also given exclusive coverage to photograph the wedding ceremony of Michael Manley and Beverley Anderson. Astley has also covered local assignments for Time magazine, Sports Illustrated, London Daily Express and many international publications.

While stationed in New York, he covered the Caribbean Heads of Government meeting with President Bill Clinton at the White House, and the reception for Nelson Mandela on his first visit to New York.

As one of Jamaica's most versatile photographers, his early images of Bob Marley and The Wailers have been published in books, magazines, films, and on record jackets worldwide. He is listed in Who's Who Black American and West Indian Artists and Photographers. He has successfully exhibited at the Jamaican Consulate in New York, and has won First Prize in National Photo Awards.

Chin, who has been described as 'Photographer Par Excellence' by Howard Moo Young, "...one of the small list of those who today are on the top rung of the Jamaican photographic ladder for good artistic judgement, skill and versatility" by the late Theodore Sealy, editor of the Daily Gleaner, is all set to offer one-on-one, in-the-field instructions to a limited group of participants in a one-day workshop devoted to photographers who want to get the most out of their passion.

Learn pro secrets and priceless tips, find out the elements of Astley's success and hear the story behind his photography as he shares his expertise.

Also sharing his creativity and techniques, and assisting in the workshop will be award-winning photographer Howard Moo Young.
