  • Cement crisis to be examined

Opposition Spokesperson on Industry and Commerce, Senator Shirley Williams wants the Government to set up a Joint Select Committee of Parliament to examine and make recommendations to Parliament regarding all aspects of the cement crisis.

Senator Williams made the call while moving a resolution in the Senate yesterday. She also called on the Government to table a full report of the findings of the investigative team appointed by the Government.

  • Man appeals murder charge

The man who was sentenced last month to life imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the murder of founding member of the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-sexuals and Gays, 59-year-old Brian Williamson, is appealing against his sentence.

Justice Basil Reid had ordered that he should serve 15 years before he was eligible for parole, but 25-year-old Dwight Hayden is contending that the sentence is manifestly excessive. Williamson was stabbed and chopped some 70 times in his apartment in New Kingston on June 7, 2004.
