Registrar General's Department assists fathers - Dads to add names to kids' birth certificates free of charge
published: Saturday | June 17, 2006

Petrina Francis, Staff Reporter

THE REGISTRAR General's Department (RGD) will today give fathers whose names are not on their children's birth certificate, the opportunity to add their particulars.

According to the RGD, the first ten fathers to visit each of its offices between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. will have their names added free of cost. All others will pay $600.

"We are making it easier for them to come in with the status application forms and pay for the status," said Nicole Robinson, personal assistant to the Chief Executive Officer at the RGD.

Tomorrow will be celebrated as Father's Day and Ms. Robinson told The Gleaner the amnesty is a gift for fathers. She said the theme for the amnesty is "Let fathers share the Joy".

ADDED THEIR PARTICULARS

Ms. Robinson said more fathers are having their names added to their children's birth certificates. She revealed that, up to 2004, 55 per cent of fathers had added their particulars at the birth of the child.

She also said a father who got married to his child's mother after the child was born can add his particulars through a process of re-registration. She explained this would be done by reregistering the child as if he or she was born in wedlock.
