Top refs get fine World Cup send-off
published: Friday | May 26, 2006

Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

PRENDERGAST

THE JAMAICA Referees' Association in cooperation with the Kingston and St. Andrew Referees' Association and Cable and Wireless (C&W), yesterday gave Peter Prendergast and Anthony Garwood heartfelt send-offs before the two left the island last night for trip to Germany and the 2006 World Cup.

The function, held at the Jamaica Football Federation's Offices in New Kingston, was well attended with referees from all over the island showing up to wish Prendergast and his assistant Garwood, who will team up with Joseph Taylor of Trinidad and Tobago, the best of luck as Jamaica's only representatives at the World Cup.

TELEPHONES

C&W issued the officials with Netspeak phones that will allow them to call Jamaica and speak with their families free of charge, while their families will be given phones that will allow them to call Germany at local rates.

Vice-presi-dent of marketing at C&W, Jackie Knight, made the presentation of the phones to Prendergast, saying that C&W, as the official telecommunications provider of the World Cup, was proud to have Jamaicans involved in the tournament.

"We are extremely proud to be a part of the celebration of the achievements of these two gentlemen," said Knight.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

There were also words of encouragement from chairman of the Inter-Secondary School's Sports Association (ISSA), Cynthia Cooke, Kingston and St. Andrew Football Association president, Stewart Stephenson, Wray and Nephew communi-cations and promotions manager, Andrew Price, Harbour View's managing director Clyde Jureidini and Referees' Association chairman Charles Barrett.
