US Embassy milking Jamaicans?
published: Friday | May 26, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS surprising to me that no one has seen it fit to address what most Jamaicans see as the 'milking' of funds from our society by the the United States (U.S.) government via the embassy through the processing of visa applications.

For years, the cost of applying for a U.S. visa has steadily increased until now it costs almost $8,000 to apply.

If one was to do a survey on the actual success rate of actually receiving a visa, we would realise that much more is collected in revenue, than what is given out in the form of visas.

Does the U.S. Embassy have a quota? One would beg to know. Is our Jamaican Government even concerned that its citizens are apparently being fleeced, or are they too busy seeking handouts for the U.S. to even care.

I am a permanent resident in the U.S., but that in no means make me less concerned of the plight of our nations citizens and this matter should be addressed.

I am, etc.,

CONCERNED CITIZEN

New York
