CRICKET WORLD Cup 2007, to be hosted next year in the Caribbean, will not be a factor in determining when Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller sends Jamaicans to the polls in local or general elections, constitutionally due in 2007.
Reports that the organisers of Cricket World Cup 2007 have convinced the Government of Jamaica not to hold elections six months before or after the event, have been dismissed by chief executive officer of cricket World Cup, Chris Dehring.
He told The Gleaner that there was no regulation requiring any country in the region to put off elections before or after Cricket World Cup, scheduled to begin in March 2007.
CANDIDATES IN PLACE
Meanwhile, with local government elections constitutionally due next month, deputy general secretary of the People's National Party, Colin Campbell, yesterday said the party was ensuring that all its candidates are in place by the end of May.
"We'll make sure that our party machinery is up and running, we'll make sure that our party election headquarters is open and operating so that the party leader is able to exercise any or all of the options (available to her)," said Campbell.
