NPL playoffs continue today
published: Sunday | May 21, 2006

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

LEADERS NEGRIL FC will try to extend their lead when they travel to St Georges FC as the second round of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) National Premier League playoffs continues today with two games.

In the other encounter, August Town host Naggo Head at the UWI field. Both games will start at 3:30 p.m.

Negril FC, the Western Confederation representative, scored an important 1-0 home win over August Town on Wednesday to lead the table with three points as the other game ended in a 1-1 draw.

AUGUST TOWN WITHOUT POINT

Naggo Head and St Georges FC are second on one point, while August Town are at the bottom without a point.

A win for Negril would push them to six points and well on their way in their promotional push.

The Jerome Waite-coached aggregation survived an onslaught from August Town but prevailed with a close win.

Negril's Lamart McIntosh, Andre Barrett, Kevon Grant and Howard Phillips will be the key players as the Westmoreland-based team hunts another scalp.

St Georges, the Eastern Confederation winners and the only team in the playoffs with premier league experience, had the better of play against Naggo Head but had to share the points.

However, the Portland-based outfit will be at home and could utilise that advantage to secure their first win of the campaign.

Harold Franklyn, Delroy Boyd, Omar Davis, Marlon Dyer and Dave Taylor could be the trump cards for St. Georges.

In the other encounter, August Town should also utilise their home advantage and secure their first win after dominating Negril and losing the game.

BITTER MAN

Coach Christopher Bender was a bitter man after his team squandered several goal-scoring opportunities to leave Frome without a point.

He will want to correct that and Naggo Head could pay the price as the Kingston and St Andew Football Association (KSAFA) champions look to rebound.

Tafaro O'Connor, formerly of Constant Spring, Devon Haughton and Nicholas Smith, their leading goal-scorer with 12 Super League goals, will lead the charge.

But Naggo Head, the South Central Confederation winners, will be no pushovers and could get the better of the home team.

The Harold Thomas-coached team has some talented players in Carlos Barrett, Patrick Edmondson, Fabian Sines and Damian Harris and could upset the apple cart.
