The police should not flog anyone
published: Sunday | May 21, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I am responding to an article on page C3 of The Gleaner published May 12, titled "PM demands full report on cop beating."

An excerpt of a letter that the Prime Minister sent to the commissioner's office which was published in the article read: "The police should not be flogging women."

Statements coming from the Prime Minister's office should not convey thoughts of inequity or favouritism skewed (towards) any particular group of citizens on the basis of gender or class.

Matters concerning the police are very sensitive and citizens men and women who have issues with the police, may perceive that the Prime Minister is only concerned about women or select individuals.

The Prime Minister should make it clear that "the police should not be flogging anyone." The statement worded in this manner or in another way which is appropriate conveys a more balanced view as it relates to police excesses.

I am, etc.,

STANLEY MORGAN
