Mother's Day surprise at Palisadoes
published: Sunday | May 21, 2006

Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

Racers circle the track during a go kart race at the Palisados Strip.

MOTHER'S DAY took on a different meaning for Bridgette Fong Yee this year.

In addition to the adoration from her children and fans, she watched her son, Brian Fong Yee, turn in a consistent performance at the JKA Go Kart race meet, held at the Palisadoes International Raceway, last Sunday.

"I was so excited, I took off my hat and jumped up and down," said Mrs. Fong Yee, who was one of four women presented with Mothers' Day roses by the Jamaica Karting Association (JKA), at the track.

She explains that for some time, they have been trying to tune her son's go kart to get it to run the way they wanted it to run and finally it was doing exactly that. Brian who has been off form, got two second places and a third, in the Rotax events he competed in.

TOP PERFORMER

The top performer of the meet was the teenage sensation, the 2005 'Karter of the Year', Timothy Stewart, who dominated the Rotax Junior Class. He won three races and was presented with the 'Star of Meet' plaque, which goes to the most outstanding driver of the day.

"This is his best performance of the season. He not only won three races, but also qualified on pole and produced the fastest lap times," said Duncan Stewart, who believes that his son is now in good shape to qualify for the Jamaican team, which will be competing at the Rotax Challenge Series later this year in the United States.

A retired rally driver, Mr. Stewart believed that in terms of driving skill, his 15 year-old son is now ready, and with patience and maturity, very soon he may conquer the world.

The DHL team captain, Peter Rae, was also in top shape, winning three races. He is almost sure to be amongst the karters who will be representing Jamaica at the Rotax International Championship.

Another top performer was Dominic Moore in the Rotax International Class.

"I won two out of three races and finished second in the last," said a smiling Dominic.
